Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a nose job among Australians, is a procedure that is typically administered on patients who wish to cosmetically alter the appearance of their now. It is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures among adults all over the world and is even commonly administered on teenagers or young children in the event of an injury. For patients under 18 who wish to undergo a rhinoplasty, there is a process that they must undergo that involves a psychological assessment and a hold before they can get the surgery.

The procedure can help to address patients who may feel embarrassed, shy or even uncomfortable about the size, shape or overall structure of their nose. Ideal candidates include men and women who want to alter or enhance their facial profile. The procedure should always be performed by a facial plastic surgeon or ENT surgeon. A nose job may also be performed on patients who have functionality issues, such as a deviated septum or sleep apnoea.

It’s important to remember that everyone has flaws! For some, they are easy to hide or can be overlooked. However, for other patients, it can be drastic and even distract from their overall appearance and natural beauty. Rhinoplasty surgery can help achieve facial symmetry and balance your overall appearance. If you have ever been the subject of embarrassment, ridicule, teasing or jokes about your nose, a nose job might be the solution!

Should I Get a Nose Job?

A nose job is not necessarily the solution for everyone. It’s important to remember that plastic surgery is a major commitment and can require financial obligations as well as downtime. Patients will need to take time away from school and work for at least a week in most cases to help ensure they can heal from their surgery properly. If you do strenuous activity, exercise or lots of bending over for your work (or in your spare time), you will likely need to take more time away from these things.

That being said, patients who undergo rhinoplasty often feel a more improved quality of life and increased self-confidence after the procedure. A nose job is reserved for the cosmetic alterations and enhancement of the nose, nasal bridge, nasal tip and nostrils.

If your overall nasal shape or structure distracts from your appearance – or impacts your breathing or overall functionality of the nose – a nose job might be an ideal solution.

Many patients believe it can help them look and feel better.

What To Know About Rhinoplasty

A nose job can be performed in various ways. Traditionally, a surgeon will perform the procedure as an open or closed surgery, which determines where the incisions are made and how much skin is pulled back. This is typically determined by the level of correction desired. Whenever possible, your surgeon will try to create the incisions in a way that reduces the risk of scarring. The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and can typically be completed in a few hours. Some patients may be advised to stay overnight in the hospital to help monitor the healing process.

After a nose job, you will be sent home with instructions regarding care and recovery. Patients will typically be fitted with a splint and soft packing within the nasal cavity to help hold it in place while the incisions heal. The initial healing process can take up to a week, during which swelling, redness, bruising and tenderness will likely be present in the area. Patients can use ice or a cold compress to help relieve some symptoms, but with time they should subside on their own. You’ll be given instructions to follow while showering and sleeping, which can help to speed along the recovery process and help ensure that no complications arise.

Patients who wear glasses or have nose jewelry will be required to find an alternative option for up to six months, as well, as patients are instructed not to wear anything on the bridge of their nose while healing. You surgeon will provide you with care instructions following your nose job.

The Benefits of Nose Surgery

A nose job can be an excellent way to address imperfection within the nose. Patients who undergo nose surgery often do so to correct issues related to the size, shape, or overall features of the nose. This can include a nasal tip that hooks or protrudes; a nasal bridge that is too wide, narrow, tall or short; nostrils that are too wide; and more.
